Does anyone know how steep 9th Ave SW is, between 9th St and 8th St? Mapmyride shows it as 20%, but it seems that mapmyride maxes out at 20%. Would someone with a bike computer capable of measuring grade be willing to ride it and report back? It's got to be one of the steepest in the area.
If possible please include length, vertical gain, average grade, max grade.
How about some of the other hills around here?
Thanks!

I always thought Wilshire drive was the steepest around town. I also think the Oxenburg (B road near Byron), was about the steepest around.
I have no ideas on % grades. I guess you could figure it out with an altimeter that is on several of the Garmin models. Something about rise over run and the Pathagorean Theorem? Someone brighter than I am would be a better help.

Jno, Thanks for the tip about Wilshire. I'd never done that one before so I went out there last night. That's a nice hill!
Dave, Thanks for the GPS output on 9th Ave. I had no idea that cycling computers could produce that kind of data. Now I want to get one too.

That's fantastic- thanks. Gives you a lot of respect for the Tour guys, going up those kinds of inclines for miles.
It would be great if you would consider posting more grades for other popular hills.

I think I have a new candidate for steepest hill. Skyline Drive, the south part of the loop (closest to Circle Drive). Anyone have a grade on that one?

I measured it with the clinometer on my iphone last week. It hits 20% at times.

I'll believe that. It's ugly going counterclockwise, and really ugly going clockwise. Is the clinometer an app? Which one?

That was going clockwise. I checked at 4 or 5 spots with the clinometer, and all were between 14 and 20%. The app is simply called "Clinometer". I think it was $0.99.
I do agree it's the steepest hill I've found around here, though short (clockwise). I've never done it going counterclockwise - may have to try next time I ride by.

Glendale Hills is steep, also - about 120 feet in a quarter mile. You can circle up glendale hills and back down rocky creek - it's about a mile round trip. connect.garmin.com/activity/41737206

Thanks. Haven't stumbled on that one yet. I've been doing some combination of Viola, Wilshire, the road next to Wilshire, and both sides of Northern Heights Blvd (Rd?, Pkwy?- the one that runs all the way across) in the mornings before work- definitely some decent climbing over there!
If anyone is ever interested, I have this notion of trying to do a "hill tour" of Rochester as a training ride- Weatherhill to Meadow Crossing to Parkview to Baihly to Skyline back over Baihly to Circle drive down to bike path to Viola to Northern Heights hills to Assisi Heights and then back to Weatherhill. Seems like it covers most of the bases, without too much travel in between. Happy to do it with someone else.

You have to go to the big river if you want climbs! 114 out of Rollingstone on the way to Altura is a beast. About400 feet of elevation at 8 to 10% and the last 150' at 11 to 14%. That is a hill!
