From 9/9/2015 Post Bulletin Bicyclist's Failure to clean up provides aggravation of residents We just want to say thank you to the bicyclist that stopped to change a tire in front of our house on Bamber Valley Road. We were so happy that you left your old tire and other garbage on the side of the road. We love getting to pick up after the lazy, inconsiderate slobs that choose to leave litter in front of our hours. It gives us a little exercise going out to pick it up. Jerry and Carolyn Pittelko Rochester
I think this is a rare exception to the otherwise good behavior of cyclists. Unfortunately it only takes a few of these kinds of comments to give cyclists a bad reputation. People get upset with cyclists for not following the rules of the road, obstructing traffic, and now for being a slob.

Littering is gross! Equally gross is calling out a relatively small group vulnerable road users. What purpose does it serve?! Besides i would guess that if ones property is adjacent to any form of road it routinely gets garbage from car drivers. Do these folks write to post bulletin every time for that.?! These are the people that scare me!

A lot of cyclists do,litter, though. I see gel packs and energy bar wrappers all over the place on popular routes and at events. There's no one cleaning up for you people!! Clean up!!

yes everyone clean up after yourselves. Ride a bike to work. All those in cars/trucks if you must throw the garbage out make sure it is wrapper or a Gatorade bottle so the bike people take the blame!!! You people..........

While I agree with you, and everyone should clean up after themselves. I would think the incident that prompted the letter was an accident. Maybe the rider was rushing to catch the group and simply forgot they left their stuff. As for bar and gel wrappers, I tend to think those are mostly accidents too. I know I've accidentally dropped a wrapper when trying to pull something out of my pocket and not even realized it till I got done. Not proud of it, but it's happened. On the other hand, I constantly see drivers purposely throw cigarette butts out their windows, EVERYWHERE. But this is an accepted practice. I have yet to see a neighbor write a letter to the editor because they have to clean up butts in their yard. Besides the cigarettes, I also witness drivers throw all kinds of trash out windows, fast food garbage, drink bottles, cans, and all kinds of stuff. All this to say - I think the original letter writer is overreacting and once again blaming cyclists as if our very existence is to cause mayhem and destroy society. But seriously, we SHOULD pick up after ourselves, but if someone leaves a little trash - maybe it was a simple accident, and we can help out by picking something up when we see it on our next ride.

Wrappers- I agree with you. We've all lost a wrapper while wrestling with it on a ride. Gels, though- I think people intentionally toss them, because they are a mess. Another good reason not to use those horrid things...
